The Venice Women’s League Begins

The VWL

History was made at Venice Beach on 6/18 in the first ever games of the Venice Women’s League, a new tradition at Hooper’s Paradise. Catch up on all the action from the inaugural weekend.

GAME 1:

Gage vs. Basketball Beauties

The first ever matchup of the VWL in the ’23 season pitted Team Basketball Beauties against. Team Gage in a game which resulted in a 52-33 victory for the Beauties. Gage kept it close until late in the 3rd quarter, when they could no longer answer The Beauties star power with some of their own. Basketball Beauties’ Christina was the Player of the Game, showing out with a double double (19 pts, 11 reb), following not far behind was MJ Icey (13 pts, 5 reb, 5 ast), who handled Gage’s defense like it was just too easy. Gage’s Jordan (8 pts, 2 ast, 2 reb) and Kim H (6 pts, 6 reb) fought hard to turn the tides but were no match for the Basketball Beauties, who clearly are ready to fight their way to the Championship.

GAME 2:

Dr.’s Orders vs. Hoopbus

The second matchup of the weekend was the battle between Dr.’s Orders and Team Hoopbus, with Dr.’s Orders delivering a blowout in a 51 – 27 game. A balanced scoring affair for Dr.’s Orders saw three players score in double digits, Jordan #33 (10 pts, 3 asts), Christina #5 (10 pts, 3 rebs) and player of the game Theresa #50 (11 pts, 10 rebs). Dr.’s Orders moves to 1-0 early in the season and will look to build on the performance in week 2.

GAME 3:

Lady Sweat vs. Mango House

The VWL’s debut weekend finished off with a matchup between Team Lady Sweat and Team Mango House that ended in a blowout 51-31 win for Lady Sweat. It’s safe to say they didn’t sweat all that much. Lady Sweat hit Mango House with an early 9-0 first quarter lead and held Mango House at single-digits until the 3rd quarter. When Mango House’s star Amanda “The Microwave” started getting her groove (13 pts), Lady Sweat was already off and running. Though Lady Sweat’s Hailey “White Mamba” (7 pts, 5 reb) and Shereen (6 pts, 6 reb) were team leaders throughout the match, this was a teamwork win with Lala, Ruth, Marrissa, and Emily all putting up 6 points each. Lady Sweat has a talented roster who’s ready to work and Amanda “The Microwave’s” talent may not be enough to guarantee Mango House a win next week.
